Year 2 Spring 2024

This term our topic has been Wolves. When Year 2 returned to school after the Christmas holidays they found a mysterious basket of items. After investigation and thinking about the clues we found out that the basket belonged to Little Red Riding Hood. We have read different versions of the story and written our own descriptions of Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf. We wrote our wolf descriptions up as wanted posters using our best handwriting.

Then we continued our work on wolves where we researched real wolves. We found that real wolves aren’t big and bad like you read in fairytales but they are actually quite wary of humans. Did you know that wolves live and hunt in packs? As part of our topic we had a visit from Raffy, an Alaskan malamute. We loved having Raffy come to visit us in class and the children were able to think of some excellent adjectives to describe him.

In Science, we have enjoyed researching the material properties rigid, strong and flexible and we have been making bridges for the gingerbread man to cross the river. We found that strong and rigid materials were best for this purpose. We have also been on a winter walk around the school and we compared this to our walk in the autumn.

In Geography, we have been comparing Hook to Southampton. We thought about where in the world Southampton was and made some location booklets starting with earth and zooming right down to Southampton in the south of England. We noticed Southampton is next to the sea and has a big port. We explored what a port was and built our own ports to find out how ports work which was lots of fun. We have also thought about the differences between towns, villages and cities.

For our RE work on special clothes some children liked sharing their clothes with the class and discussing why they were special.

In our PE sessions, we have been learning how to make gymnastic shapes and perform balances. This has been fun and we are continuing to make routines and use the apparatus to practise these.

For Spring 2 our topic has been Long Ago. In English we have written our own versions of the Three Billy Goats Gruff but with a dragon in the story as a hero. The children showed some fantastic imagination when coming up with their ideas.

In History this term we have been learning about Kings and Queens. We have looked at the lives of Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. The children learned about how life has changed during the reign of each Queen. The children were particularly surprised to see that normal household items such as a flushing toilet were very different in Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria's reigns.

The children have loved our DT this term where they have designed and made story character puppets. The children showed all of our values when making these but in particular perseverance and teamwork! As you will see from the photos the children have done a fantastic job and are very proud of their finished puppets.

We also enjoyed a brilliant 'Wild World Book Week' where the children explored different texts each day. Please enjoy looking at some photos from all of our learning this term.
