PSHE Overview

RHE and PSHE Statement Hook Infant School

At Hook Infant School we provide a robust RHE and PSHE programme which helps children make sense of their world and gives them the skills and understanding to become healthy, independent and happy children.

Our RHE and PSHE curriculum is not only embedded in our wider curriculum, but also delivered discreetly through weekly lessons where children develop their emotional health and well-being, individuality and explore their relationships. The children also look at themes such as bullying, understanding relationships and making sense of their own and the feelings of others, learn about the world around them, explore values and citizenship. This is enriched by various school trips, opportunities for children to join extra-curricular sport, language and wildlife clubs as well as class assemblies and school productions. For those children who benefit from extra support in their personal and social development we have ELSA support for 1:1 and small, targeted social groups.

Our children are active members of our school community and they experience and explore democracy through PSHE, P4C, assemblies, School Council and voluntary schemes like Young Watchers. And Wild Things. Throughout the year members of the wider community, including the fire service, NHS providers and local church group Open the Book, make valued contributions to the children’s development through regular visits.

We work closely with local nurseries and with Hook Junior School to make transition periods at the beginning and end of the children’s time with us as happy and seamless as possible. For Year 2 frequent visits to the Juniors and shared assemblies and playtimes are supplemented by PSHE lessons focused on change and growth.
