Wild Things Summer Term 2022

We started off this terms Wild Things with some activities learning about nocturnal animals and how to find out how to know if they have been around. We listened to recorded calls and learned facts about the animals, as well as using sand traps and learning about "whose poo".

We also went on a bug hunt in Wild Things Wood, the Copse and on the field.
We also created a beetle pyramid and the children carried logs from the Copse to the "Waste of Space" area in our car park. This was very heavy work, but the children worked well in moving the logs, placing them in the hole I had dug. They then back filled the hole, filling in gaps and then stamping down the loose soil. Hopefully these will become a home to stag beetles in the future. We already have lesser stag beetles living on site, so fingers crossed.
We finished up the beetle pyramid by drilling holes for solitary bees and other minibeasts
We spent a session in Wild Things Wood where we looked for minibeasts in the leaf litter. We found a range of minibeasts from millipedes, to shield bugs to black laceweb spiders. We had an extra special challenge to find a pseudoscorpion, which is a very small scorpion looking invertebrate without the sting. Typically these are 5mm or less in size and it helped us to focus on all of the minute animals moving about in our trays. Unfortunately, we didn't find any but looking for them helped us to find lots of other animals.
During Wild Things we often watch videos when we are getting ready for the activities or when we are going home.
